Proclamation by Governor of Nevada
Guest List
The 29th reunion of the First Armored Amphibian Battalion
was held at the John Ascuaga’s Nugget Hotel and Casino, Sparks, NV October
5-9, 2005.
The hospitality room was open and registration was on Wednesday, October
5th. This is a period of time to see old friends and meet
new ones. There were 44 Marine registered.
Thursday, October 6th the buses loaded for tour to Lake
Tahoe with lunch aboard a cruise boat.
Friday , October 7th a bus tour was taken for the state
museum in Carson City and the long 89 turn road to Virginia City where
lunch was served at the Delta Saloon. This was followed with a mine
tour train trip. There were two bus loads for this tour.
Saturday, October 8th was the annual memorial service, business
meeting and various company meetings.
At the memorial service we had Reed High School ROTC color guard when
the local USMC reserve was unable to be available. They place the flags
and preformed well.
The pledge of allegiance was recited (under God, of course) and then
the names of our deceased Marines were read by the company representatives
. A Company was read by Bob Pierce, B Company by Charles Perkins, C
Company by Bill Carter, D Company by Joe Baumbach and H&S Company
by Al Vogel. For the first time of reunion memorial services TAPS was
not played.
Following the memorial service a business meeting was conducted. Don
Ferchau gave the treasure report. Dale Barker gave a book sell report
and reflected that he could no longer maintain the E-mail directory,
which will be maintained by Linda Vogel who also maintains the battalion
address directory. Marlin Blayden gave a short report on his experience
overseas with our unit. Grady Coker gave a short report on our website.
Business concluded the various companies met in individual meetings.
In the evening the annual banquet dinner was held with 137 guest. Joe
Baumbach led us in singing the Marine Corps Hymn. Tom Jacobs read a
nice proclamation from the governor of Nevada addressed to the First
Armored, which made the week of October 2-8 as First Armored Amphibian
Battalion Week In Nevada. It was much appreciated by all
present. Since 1995 we have had no dance music, or band. Tom Coleman
gave the prayer before the banquet dinner. Most of the after banquet
meal was devoted to photo taking and visiting.
This reunion was unusual from several points and involved a show of
team cooperation.
Earl Hill, B Company Marine, was the reunion host and fell ill, but
made all arrangements for hotel accommodations, tours, hospitality room
and banquet dinner. He called Dick Zenger and Bob Pierce a few days
before the reunion and they covered the last minute details and covered
them very well. Thanks to a job well done.
Randy Watkins, Earl’s associate, took charge of financial detail and
did an outstanding job of record keeping.
Kathy Morris, Earl’s secretary, supported in several areas.
Dick and Edna Zenger picked up the details of the reunion contacting
the Convention Services Manager and the Catering Manager to make the
hospitality room services workable. Dick arranged for purchases of beverages
and snacks for the bar. Plus, saw to many details and cleanup of the
room after the reunion.
Dottie and Fred Addison anchored and supervised the registration desk
and helped serve refreshments.
George Tremblay helped serve and oversee the bar activity.
Michael Perkins served as "ice man" for the refreshment table.
Geneve DeLauer, a Reno resident, called Earl volunteering to help in
any way. She brought two friends who assisted Dottie Addison at the
registration desk.
Tami and Kevin Fegert. Tami is Earl’s daughter and acted as nurse and
personal caretaker of him. Kevin helped her escort Earl to the reunion
activities and banquet dinner.
Bob and Mary Pierce supported the Zengers in many ways. Plus, Bob provided
us with this list of those who helped make our 29th reunion
a success. Much appreciated.
